Something that’s been on my heart and mind a lot lately is how much focus we tend to place on how our bodies look—and how little attention we give to how our bodies feel.
When you think about it, it’s wild: the hyperfixation on how bodies are perceived externally (whether by ourselves or others) and the growing disconnect from the quiet, internal, moment-to-moment felt experience of truly knowing our breath-and-bones home.
Even when I’m not focused on my external appearance or how it’s being perceived, spending time online (which I do a lot of the day, every day) is, by its very nature, a disembodied and disconnected experience. When I’m online—lost in my screen, passively consuming endless information, opinions, and images—I find it oh-so-easy to lose track of what my physical body is experiencing and feeling. Without a conscious, intentional practice, I simply forget to notice.
This is normalized but not normal. Or, at least, it wasn’t the way I came into this world, spent my childhood and young adulthood, or want to live now.
